Just like every other price hike, the end users suffer, which in this case are website owners, who will finally bear the burden of this price hike. To ascertain the level of this extra cost on website owners in Nigeria, the following analysis is done.

Two months ago, the CPanel company, the owner of Cpanel application – a  Linux base hosting control panel that simplifies web hosting and management, increased it’s pricing from “server billing” to “user billing”. This geometrically increased the cost of having this online application from $45 to $355 per web server monthly. This sudden increase of about 800% with only 2 months notification is not going well for most web hosting business worldwide as this new pricing takes effect in few days.

A server can have about 1000 hosting accounts on it. Cpanelcost per web server now cost $355 monthly. Dividing $355 by 1000 gives $0.355 monthly. This will accumulate to $4.25 yearly extra bill for website owners. To Nigerians website owners, this is about $4.25 Naira equivalent, which is N1533. For example, this means that a website owner in Nigeria who previously pays N3000 for web hosting will now pay about N4533 from September, 2019.

Having said that, it doesn’t mean that this unanticipated increase will be exactly N1533, It can be lower or higher depending on some factors like the pricing policy of one’s web hosting provider, Dollar to Naira exchange rate, and the number of web hosting account on the server to mention a few.

Thanks for reading. Hope this clears some doubt!
